USA Networks Planning ‘Bourne’ Prequel Series

The Playlist reported this week that USA Networks has big plans in store for the Jason Bourne franchise. The cable network is producing a prequel series for television titled Treadstone, which will be centered on telling the story of the program before the events of the 2002 film The Bourne Identity.

Even though the series is in its initial stages, it already has some impressive talent attached. Tim Kring, best known for his work on series like Heroes and Crossing Jordan, will write and executive produce. Meanwhile Ramin Bahrani, the director behind films 99 Homes and HBO’s adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, will also executive produce and will direct the pilot.

As of right now, Treadstone will not involve Matt Damon or franchise filmmaker Paul Greengrass. The series will instead follow  several different agents around the world as they embark on different missions.

Treadstone marks an addition to the growing television trend of prequel spin-offs based on already successful works. HBO is already well into its infamous process of making at least one Game of Thrones prequel series, and Amazon is dedicated to a Lord of the Rings spin-off series.

With its plans to work off of the Jason Bourne franchise, USA Networks is buying into this recent trend and hoping to attract big ratings by adding to the story of one of the most popular American action franchises.
