The Upright Citizens Brigade founders (UCB) – Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh – have signed a first-look deal with Universal Cable Productions.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the UCB founders will generate scripted content for NBCUniversal Entertainment networks, like USA or Bravo, while being backed by UCP. UCB currently has five shows in development at UCP which are We Can Fix You, House of Delta, Sing, The Peligroso Project and Hell House.
We Can Fix You (Besser, Poehler, Roberts, Walsh, Owen Burke and Aliyah Silverstein) follows UCB comedians as they use bizarre, unorthodox methods to try and help a studio audience with their problems. House of Delta (Laura Grey and Megan Stein) takes a comically over-dramatic, political thriller look at the Delta Omega sorority at Southeast Georgia State University. Sing (Jeff Hiller and Pam Murphy) is a parody of shows like Empire and Nashville that centers on the cutthroat karaoke industry. The Peligroso Project (Horatio Sanz and Tom Gianas) is a variety-esque show highlighting Latino talent through comedy sketches, digital shorts and man-on-the-street segments. Hell House (Adam McCabe, Noam Bleiweiss and Betsy Sodaro) is a mockumentary-style show that follows blindly passionate church members as they attempt to plan a church haunted house.
Dawn Olmstead, UCP executive vp of development, said, “UCB is comprised of a group of amazingly talented people who are fearless when it comes to taking comedic risks. This partnership is a perfect fit for the studio because it allows us to incubate fresh ideas and make our mark in the comedy space by tapping into UCB’s unique point of view. We’re thrilled to be working with them.”
Lisa Ullman, UCB’s head of television development, said, “This collaboration with Universal Cable Productions provides us with the resources to execute ideas and cultivate new audiences across platforms. The breadth and caliber of UCB talent is remarkable and with five theaters across two coasts, there’s no shortage of content to mine.”
The Upright Citizens Brigade, including the four founding members, have been involved in plenty of successful projects. UCB had its own Comedy Central series for three seasons with Upright Citizens Brigade and they now have a show on NBC’s Seeso comedy streaming service with The UCB Show. Besser, Poehler, Roberts and Walsh have been involved in a multitude of comedy projects including Crossballs, Veep, Parks and Recreation, Key & Peele and Improv4Humans. The list of UCB alums consists of fantastically talented comedians like Paul Scheer (How Did This Get Made?, NTSF:SD:SUV, Human Giant), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Rec, House of Lies), Ellie Kemper (The Office, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street, Human Giant, The Hangover), Jason Mantzoukas (How Did This Get Made?, The League, Enlightened), Andy Daly (Review, Eastbound and Down, Reno 911), Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair (Best Friends Forever, Playing House), Adam Pally (Happy Endings, The Mindy Project, Night Owls) Seth Morris (Children’s Hospital, Kroll Show, Go On) and Zach Woods (Silicon Valley, The Office, In The Loop).
