It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
Today it was announced who would be playing the coveted role of the Man of Steel in season 2 of Supergirl. As fate would have it, Tyler Hoechlin of Teen Wolf will be the next incarnation of Superman/Clark Kent.
It was previously announced that season 2 of Supergirl would be facing a lot of changes. CBS recently dropped the show due to budget cuts, and the series found home on the CW, which has pretty much become the home of all DC Universe TV series. Earlier this month, it was also released that Supergirl would be adding Superman to its character lineup.
In the first season, Superman appeared either as a back-lit silhouette or a child played by Daniel DiMaggio in a dream sequence.
The Supergirl Twitter page tweeted out the announcement today.
Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Comicbook.com, “Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”
Kreisberg had previously discussed how they had included Kal-El in season 1 of Supergirl. “For us, Superman is more of an idea than it is a personification of the character, so we’re more than happy to have him backlit. We’re perfectly happy to have him swoop in, save Kara in Episode Three, because the real heart of the story is that she then kicks Reactron’s butt. She’s the one that takes him down, and that’s what much more important for us.”
“So it’s not like we’ve been asking for more Superman or can we do it like this or can we have him in this. For us, we’re perfectly happy with the amount of Superman that we’ve had because it’s the exact amount that we’ve asked for,” Added Kreisberg.
Superman may be coming to National City, but it doesn’t sound like he will be stealing Supergirl’s thunder.
Hoechlin’s TV credits include Teen Wolf, 7th Heaven, and appearances in Castle and CSI:Miami. The newest actor to play Superman has also appeared in films such as Road To Perdition, Hall Pass, and Everbody Wants Some!. He will also be in he upcoming Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed which will hit theaters in 2017 and 2018.
The casting announcement makes Hoechlin the sixth actor to play the Man of Steel in a live-action TV series. Others who have donned the cape and tights on the small screen include George Reeves, John Haymes Newton, Gerard Christopher, Dean Cain, and Tom Welling.
