Two Separate Car Karaoke Shows Ordered To Series By Spike and Apple Music

Spike and Apple Music are hoping that people enjoy car karaoke enough to watch it for an entire show.

Deadline reports that Spike has ordered 10 episodes of Caraoke Showdown, and Apple Music has ordered 16 episodes of Carpool Karaoke from CBS. Both shows are spin-offs of popular late show segments. Caraoke Showdown is Spike’s attempt to capitalize on its hit The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon segment spin-off Lip Sync Battle, while Apple Music and CBS’ Carpool Karaoke comes from the highly popular segment of the same name from The Late Late Show With James Corden.

Though both shows center on car karaoke, they each tackle the format in different ways.

Caraoke Showdown features Craig Robinson (The Office, Mr. Robot) as the host who drives around, picking up random people on the street to be contestants on a karaoke game show. The karaoke-themed game show will include contestants having to finish lyrics, act out songs and do some classic karaoke.

Carpool Karaoke, though coming from CBS and based on a The Late Late Show With James Corden segment, will not be hosted by Corden. A host and premiere date will be announced down the road. Like the James Corden segment, Carpool Karaoke will consist of celebrities riding and singing along with the host. The pair will visit places relevant to the guest, sing along to the guest’s favorite songs and surprise unsuspecting fans along the way. As part of the exclusive first-window licensing agreement that Apple Music and CBS Television Studios have, a new episode of Carpool Karaoke will become available to Apple Music subscribers each week after it premieres.

Each channel’s take on car karaoke seems fine, but only time will tell if watching two people sing karaoke in a car can sustain itself for a full, half-hour show.
