TV Land has found two of the three leads for the channel’s The First Wives Club reboot series.
According to Deadline, Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother, Buffy, American Pie) and Megan Hilty (Smash, Sean Saves the World) have been cast in the series. The First Wives Club, based on the popular book by Olivia Goldsmith, is being written by Rebecca Addelman (The New Girl, China, IL) and executive produced by Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, Men In Trees, The Big C) and Karen Rosenfelt (Me Before You, The Devil Wears Prada, The Twilight Series).
TV Land’s The First Wives Club tells the story of three women, best friends and former classmates, in San Francisco who are brought together after their close college friend dies in an accident. As the three friends reconnect, they decide to start a new chapter in their lives.
Hannigan is set to play Maggie in the series, an English professor who is frustrated with the state of her marriage. Spurred on by the tragic death of her friend, Maggie leaves her husband and decides to take the reins in her life.
Hilty has been cast as Kim, a divorcee with an 8-year-old son, who was once a successful Hollywood actress. Kim has trouble getting acting work because of her age, but she still works on staying in shape and does commercials in the hopes that she will get another big break.
Goldsmith’s book has been brought to life on screen before with Hugh Wilson’s (Police Academy) 1996 film adaptation. The movie starred Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler as the titular “first wives”, and was a surprise box office hit going on to earn $105 million.
