Cord-cutting football fans’ year may have gotten a bit brighter. According to The Verge, streaming service Tubi will air Super Bowl LIX along with linear TV on Sunday, February 9th. Tubi, a free ad-supported service from Fox, offers TV series, films, and selective live TV options. As of last month, the streamer served 97 million active users.
The Verge reports streaming the game on a phone or TV will require a Tubi account. However, it won’t be the only place to find 2025’s matchup. Super Bowl LIX, which features Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper, Kendrick Lamar (“Not Like Us”, “Humble”) as the halftime performer, will be available on Fox, Fox Deportes and Telemundo, the NFL Plus app, and Fox’s website. Coverage of the game will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET. A red-carpet event will be hosted by media personality and wife of San Francisco 49er, Christian McCaffery, Olivia Culpo (The Other Woman, Paradise City).
According to The Verge, it is the largest live event for the 2020-purchased platform as more streamers offer similar live content. Peacock found better success the second time with the 2024 Olympics while Prime Video’s deal with the NFL spawned lucrative results. In addition to its Thursday Night Football airings, Prime experienced a ratings boost with the AFC North’s Wild Card game as the Baltimore Ravens decimated the Pittsburgh Steelers’ playoff chances. Prime Video has also sparked a deal with the NBA for the 2025-2026 season.
Before that Steelers’ loss, Netflix showcased two Christmas Day NFL games between Pittsburgh and the Kansas City Chiefs, followed by the Houston Texans and Ravens. Viewership peaked during the second game, drawing 27 million viewers for the anticipated halftime show. Grammy-winning Houstonian Beyonce (Lemonade, Cowbow Carter) performed, delivering what is now known as the Beyonce Bowl. A tremendous improvement from Netflix’s two earlier live attempts: 2023’s Love Is Blind season four reunion and last year’s failed boxing match between Mike Tyson (The Hangover) and social media personality, Jake Paul.
Separate from live sports, Netflix is diversifying its live offerings: WWE’s Monday Night Raw premiered with huge success; the Screen Actors Guild Awards will call the Tudum platform its new home; and, following the success of his week-long run at 2024’s Netflix Is A Joke festival, comedian John Mulaney (The Bear, Big Mouth) is planning weekly live series.
