Top Creatives Working On DC Universe Revamp Projects, Damon Lindelof Revealed on New ‘Lanterns’ Series

The new television series Lanterns has received a behind-the-scenes update since its original announcement by co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn (Peacemaker, Guardians of the Galaxy). While still in the early phases of production, Gunn shared that Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and Chris Mundy (Ozark, Criminal Minds) have joined him in writing the new series, via The Hollywood Reporter.

In a previous mxdwn article, Gunn and co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran (The Suicide Squad, Aquaman) announced plan to create continuity within the DC Universe like never before, connecting characters, actors, and storylines across movies, television and games. With Gunn and Safran’s new plan, details pertaining to Lanterns, a previously announced series in 2019 under different creatives, changed to align with the DC Universe’s new vision.

The addition of Lindelof and Mundy is a part of the Lanterns new direction, “as well as Eisner-winning and long-time DC comic author Tom King,” The Hollywood Reporter confirms. With Lindelof’s experience in the world of superheroes, winning 11 emmys for his HBO adaptation of Watchmen, and Mundy’s experience in the true crime genre, Gunn said, “[we] had written wonderful pilot script and bible [and are] putting together a crack team of writers,” via The Hollywood Reporter.

Previous media coverage revealed that Lanterns would be True Detective-like in tone, following Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart in escapades patrolling Earth and the outer galaxy. After the series airs, the characters are set to stumble across a mystery that will heavily link to DC Universe media.

Per an update from mxdwn on the Lanterns series, “one of the Lantern superheroes that could be added to this series, would be the Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion (The Rookie, Castle, Firefly), who is making its debut in the next Superman movie, set to release in 2025.”

Lanterns is still in the early phases of the project; a release date has not yet been announced for the series.
