A new iteration of Tomb Raider is in the works at Amazon Prime and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Killing Eve, Fleabag) will be in charge of writing the script for the popular video game show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new TV series, which is still in the development stages, is the latest to come from Waller-Bridge’s recently renewed overall deal with Amazon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge will only participate in the show as writer and executive producer but not as an actress. The main character of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft, has been interpreted by both Angelina Jolie (Maleficent, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and Alicia Vikander (Irma Vep, Beckett) in the live-action movies while actresses like Camila Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy, Justice League Dark), Keeley Hawes (The Durrells, Bodyguard), Minnie Driver (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Speechless) and Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter, Conviction) have voiced Lara in both video games and animated shows.
Alongside Waller-Bridge, other executive producers for the show include newcomer Ryan Andolina, the former head of comedy and drama; Amanda Greenblatt (Z: The Beginning of Everything, One Mississippi), the former head of overall deals; and Dmitri Johnson (Little Nightmares, Skulls of the Shogun) who will executive produce via his DJ2 company.
The video game adaptation is the latest project that Waller-Bridge is working on at Amazon. It was previously announced that the Fleabag alum is also developing Sign Here, an adaptation based on Claudia Lux’s only book. The author is set to write the script.
Amazon announced over a year ago that the company had greenlit a series from Waller-Bridge. No details were given about said series, including the genre of the show. Sources via The Hollywood Reporter note that Tomb Raider is not the project Amazon announced previously. Production for the unknown series was set to start in 2022 but it is unclear if the unnamed show’s production remains on schedule.
Waller-Bridge had previously announced her participation in a TV series based on the action thriller Mr. & Mrs. Smith, with Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) also starring on the show. It was later revealed that Waller-Bridge had exited from the project due to creative differences with Glover. The actors had previously starred together in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and have remained friends after her exit from the show.
Following the breakout success of Amazon’s Fleabag, Waller-Bridge has remained a solicited actress and writer. When her initial deal with Amazon was coming close to its expiration date, sources via The Hollywood Reporter say that the company was more than eager to renew her deal. The Fleabag alum is slated to star alongside Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, Star Wars: A New Hope) in the new Indiana Jones movie. She also co-wrote the newest James Bond film No Time to Die.
The new Tomb Raider series is still in pre-production and has not released a date to begin production or an estimated release date. In the meantime, watch Phoebe Waller-Bridge star in the show that made her popular, Fleabag, only on Amazon Prime.
