Despite wrapping up its first season on July 12, the TNT post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming second season, according to Screen Rant. The program is a reboot from the 2013 film under the same name and directed by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite). It was adapted for television by Josh Friedman (Foundation, Avatar 2) before being replaced by Graeme Manson (Orphan Black). Snowpiercer is executively produced by the likes of Joon-ho, Marty Adelstein (Prison Break, Aquarius), James Hawes (Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful), Park Chan-wook (Oldboy), Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Doctor Strange), and many others. Fortunately for the newcomer series, the second season completed nearly all of its production prior to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which halted all film and television production for months and is still on-going for much of Hollywood.
Snowpiercer follows the same premise as the film it is based on. Following a global experiment to cool the Earth due to rising global warming concerns, the world is frozen over and the only survivors have taken refuge on a train that continuously rides around train tracks that cross the globe. The show is set in 2021 and delves into the social injustice and class warfare that exists within the train due to the first, second, and third-class passengers being separated by distinct train cars in addition to the stowaways, otherwise known as “Tailies,” being thrown into the last car. The series centers on its protagonist, homicide detective Layton Well portrayed by Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), who is a part of the Tailies at the end of the train until he is called up to help investigate a murder on the train’s third class cars.
Additional cast includes the likes of Academy Award winner in Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), Annalise Basso (Bedtime Stories), Mickey Sumner (Low Winter Sun), Sasha Frolova (Little Women), Alison Wright (The Americans), Iddo Goldberg (Peaky Blinders), Roberto Urbina (Narcos), Lena Hall (Girls), Susan Park (Fargo), Sheila Vand (Argo), and Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead, Grand Theft Auto V). In the new teaser trailer for the second season, Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean will be a part of the ensuing cast as the main villain Wilford, the creator and operator of the train.
Previously, it was thought to be that the character of Wilford, portrayed by Ed Harris (Westworld, The Truman Show) in the 2013 film, was to be an imaginary figurehead for power on the train. In the beginning stages of its first season, it appeared that Connelly’s character, Melanie Cavill, was the voice of the train’s PA, but also a speaker for Wilford’s words. After a few episodes, it appeared to suggest that Melanie was in fact the hypothetical Wilford character and created him to allow her to walk across the train cars and observe all passengers. Yet, it appears that Bean will be taking on the villain role for the TNT drama.
Currently, there is no announced date for the second season premiere. Check out the teaser trailer below:
