Tim Allen Has Discussed The Idea of a ‘Home Improvement’ Spinoff With Cast-mates

Tim Allen (Toy Story) has recently mentioned he has given thought to reprising his role of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor on the show Home Improvement. The series ran from 1991 to 1999, and, via Comicbook, was the role that gave Allen household recognition.

According to Comicbook, Allen spoke with The Messenger about a potential Home Improvement spinoff that could involve some of the original cast. “I see Richard Karn a lot, and I talk to the boys… and I’m there as one of their friends. We keep talking about [a spinoff]… It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how weird it would be if Home Improvement would be about the kids’ kids. Like, if all of them had children, and I’m a grandparent. Home Re-Improvement or something like that. It’s come up.”

The series Home Improvement is a half-hour sitcom that features a show inside a show. Tim is a handy-man with a show all about tools and hardware called Tool Time. Tim hosts the show alongside Al Borland, played by Richard Karn (Last Man Standing). Tim often makes mistakes or causes accidents on his show while demonstrating how to use his tools, but his audience never seems to mind, as they assume these mishaps are purposeful and intended to show viewers what not to do. The chaos also follows Tim home, where he attempts to raise three sons played by Zachery Ty Bryan (The Fast and the Furious), Jonathan Taylor Thomas (The Lion King), and Taran Noah Smith (Little Bigfoot 2: The Journey Home), alongside wife Jill played by Patricia Richardson (County Line).

Following his start in Home Improvement, Allen went on to act in other films and shows that have done very well such as The Santa Clause in 1994. In 2022, the film was brought back as a television show titled The Santa Clauses, which is currently airing its second season on Disney+.

Although nothing is officially confirmed about a Home Improvement spinoff, with the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike over a week ago, anything is possible.
