‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Acknowledges Fans Backlash To Henry Cavill Departure From His Role As Geralt

The sudden departure of Henry Cavill’s (Elona Holmes, Superman) role as Gerald of Rivia in the Netflix original series The Witcher came as surprise to many fans. With such a big change to a major role in the series fans are considerably worried. According to Screenrant, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich(The Umbrella Academy, Daredevil) , the showrunner for The Witcher addresses the backlash from fans that came with Cavill’s departure from his role. Hissrich realizes that Cavill’s leaving of the series is a big deal to be acknowledged. Hissrich has asked fans for the backlash to end and to stick around for season three as they push forward with the series, and  expresses how she wants to keep the subject on the new The Witcher series Blood Origin.

Fans backlash for Cavill’s departure is due to many believing no one else could portray the character of Geralt as well as him. Cavill is known for his fondness of fantasy type series, and games as a fan of the The Witcher video game franchise and book series himself. According to Screenrant, his love of the franchise helped not only shape the character he portrays but also push for different creative ways to expand the series. This eventually created tension with the writers of the series as many did not like the source material of the franchise.

The Witcher has been a high achieving Netflix series based on the popular video game franchise and book series which follows the story of  Geralt of Rivia also known as the white wolf. The character Geralt is a mutated human known as a Witcher created to hunt down monsters and as an outcast find a place to belong in the vast world. Cavill has passed on the mantle of Geralt of Rivia over to Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, Isn’t It Romantic), and has expressed that he can’t wait to see what Hemsworth will do with the role. Although that won’t be until season four fans will still be able to catch Cavill in The Witcher one more time in the upcoming season three scheduled to release summer of 2023. Fans will also be able to watch the new Witcher series The Witcher: Blood Origin streaming December 25th on Netflix.
