As previously reported, last week at WalkerStalkerCon, The Vampire Diaries‘ Ian Somerhalder told fans at a Q&A panel that season 8 of the long-running teenage vampire drama on the CW would be the last. At least, what he said sounded like he meant The Vampire Diaries would be ending after season 8.
After WalkerStalkerCon tweeted Somerhalder’s statement, the internet lost its mind. The CW did not offer a comment on Somerhalder’s announcement about the fate of The Vampire Diaries.
Now, in a strange turn of events, the original tweet from WalkerStalkerCon has been deleted, and now Somerhalder has issued a new statement to amend what he had originally said.
Somerhalder took to Twitter to say, “Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe – my last year – be as great as possible. Somehow in my infinite wisdom and end-of-season foggy brain, I managed to make it sound like the show was coming to an end. Cut-to the press running stories that the show would be done after Season 8. Thing is, the people who actually make that decision (the CW and WB) haven’t made it yet! So let’s take things one step at a time: Season 7 wrap, vacation, lots of sleep, let the writers get started on Season 8, and then we’ll all see where we go from there.”
The good news, for you The Vampire Diaries fans out there, is that there has been no official decision as to whether or not season 8 will be the last. The bad new is that it sounds like, regardless of the show’s fate, season 8 will be the last for Somerhalder.
Somerhalder would not be the first leading actor or actress to leave the show. Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, exited the series at the end of the sixth season. Kate Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennet, has already announced season 8 will be her last, and now it’s looking like the series will lose one of its leading men.
Will The Vampire Diaries survive without both Salvator brothers?
