According to Deadline, The Summer I Turned Pretty is back with a bang on Prime Video. The third and final season has made a hit with its July 16 debut, gathering 25M viewers around the world on the streamer within its first seven days of availability, in accordance to data that was shared by Amazon.
In comparison to Season Two’s performance, Season Three was up 40% in viewership within the first seven days. To add on, series viewership overall has tripled from Season One to Season Three in this seven-day window, Deadline states.
The Summer I Turned Pretty has become a cultural zeitgeist in a way that very few young adult series have managed in recent years. Season Three is the fifth most-watched returning season on Prime Video, and the No. 1 most-watched season of television among women 18-34 right now, Deadline notes.
The series has traveled the globe with its No. 1 title on the streamer globally in its first seven days, Deadline adds, and it has had great performance in the UK, Germany, and Brazil. So what is the secret to this success?
Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Prime Video, Vernon Sanders shares: “I think it’s really Jenny and this incredible cast and the incredible team they’ve assembled.” “If you think about it, this was a book series that was published a fair while ago, and so I think there have been a number of people who’ve come into this over the years. What Jenny has been able to do, and hopefully we’ve been able to help, is build this community that has just been incredibly passionate and committed and interested,” he added, via Deadline.
The Summer I Turned Pretty came back this summer after a longer-than-expected hiatus. Season Three was given the green light prior to the 2023 actors and writers strikes, but production did not begin until the issues were resolved, thus explaining the delay. It has not deterred audiences, in fact, it gave Prime Video the opportunity to excite fans for the third season, Deadline says.
Sanders told Deadline that these numbers have exceeded their expectations so far: “To see these kinds of numbers after a two-year absence is what’s really blown us away. So it’s the right show at the right time and executed in the right way by an incredible team.”
In her own statement, Jenny Han (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, XO, Kitty) added: “Seeing how The Summer I Turned Pretty has resonated with millions — how the story has sparked so many fan conversations, sent the books back on the bestseller lists, and inspired so many viewers’ reactions across social media — it’s everything I could have hoped for and more. As creator and co-showrunner, I’m incredibly proud of what we made. I’m grateful we got to make all three seasons, one for each book, and grateful that audiences have been so passionately embracing the story I wanted to tell,” via Deadline.
New episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season Three can be seen on Prime Video every Wednesday through September 17, Deadline finally mentions.
