‘The Regular Show’ Will End With Season 8

There are only a select number of episodes separating us from the end of the Regular Show.

The anything but regular show was created back in 2010 for the Cartoon Network. The animated program hinges on the friendship of two eccentric characters, a bluejay named Mordecai (who is voiced by J.G. Quintel, the creator of the series) and a raccoon called Rigby (who is voiced by William Salyers). Quintel proposed the show as a student project while he attended CalArts. Since then, Regular Show has proven to be a hit for the comedic network, snagging an Emmy award in 2012 for best animated short-format animated program, a movie spinoff entitled Regular Show: The Movie which premiered in 2015, and a star-studded cast billing with Mark Hamill’s (yes, the Luke Skywalker) recurring roles as a multitude of different characters.

Earlier today, Variety announced that the upcoming eighth season of the Regular Show will be its last. However, it seems that the show has come to an amicable end after six long years. Cartoon Network’s chief content officer, Rob Sorcher, had this to say about the show’s ending:

“From JG’s original pitch on post-it notes, through eight successful seasons and more than 250 episodes produced, Regular Show has been one of the most original animated series of this generation creating indelible characters and signature comedy mayhem laced with heart. Our sincere thanks to this talented crew and cast for their incredible dedication, and I’m proud that they all agreed to go up in space together for one hilarious final journey.”

Quintel has also issued a statement, echoing the same bittersweet tone about his first solo creation:

“Making Regular Show has been so much fun. We got to tell all of the stories we wanted to tell, and making the choice to go out exactly how we want to go out. We’re so proud and excited for people to see how we’re wrapping things up in a big, big way. We’re bringing everything full circle.”

The show does certainly seem to be in good hands for the final season. As the long-running seasons and numerous Emmy nominations will indicate, Quintel and his team have a solid idea about what works and what can be done to give Regular Show their fond farewell.

Regular Show will premiere its eighth season on Monday, September 26 at 8pm. Their final episode is set to air in January of 2017.
