The series will be written by Shauna Cross (Whip it, Bad Santa 2). Cross will be executive producing Deadtown along with Valente, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, and Cliff Roberts. Entertainment One and Grey Matter Entertainment will be developing the project alongside Amazon Studios.
A new superhero series is coming to Amazon Prime, based off of the novella The Refrigerator Monologues, which is written by Catherynne M. Valente. Valente published the novella back in 2017 through Saga. The reason she was inspired to start writing the novella was watching The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from 2014 more specifically it was the death of Gwen Stacey.
The series will be titled Deadtown and will be centering on five women that have died after crossed paths of male superheroes. After their deaths, they end up meeting each other in purgatory also known as Deadtown. After finding out they were killed to ‘service’ the male heroes in their lives by giving the men an emotional backstory. Deciding they want to take back their stories they also discover their powers.
Amazon also has several other superhero shows coming in 2019. The Boys from Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless) and the animated Invincible. Also, the season two of The Tick will be airing in 2019. Amazon has only dipped their toes into the superhero realm and hopefully, they’ll continue to explore the genre.
