‘The Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Series From Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier In Development at The CW

The CW is looking to develop a live-action The Powerpuff Girls series, as reported by Deadline. Based on the original Cartoon Network animated series under the same name, The Powerpuff Girls is being penned by Diablo Cody (Juno, United States of Tara) and Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars).

The Powerpuff Girls is being described as an updated version of the original cartoon series that follows the same bright eyed superheroes, but with a twist – they are now a group of young, disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. It’s up to the girls to decide whether or not they want to reunite once again to save the world that needs them now more than ever.

Regnier is expected to executive produce the live action series alongside Cody for Vita Vera Films. Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Love, Simon), Sarah Schechter (The Flash, Black Lightning) and David Madden (Save the Last Dance) will all executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television, a subset of WarnerMedia in conjunction with Cartoon Network, will serve as the production studio.

Originally created by Craig McCracken (Dexter’s Laboratory, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends), the Powerpuff Girls cartoon was centered around three pint-sized superheroes named Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who were created by Professor Utonium using a bit of sugar, spice and everything nice along with the mysterious Chemical X. The show ran for six seasons between 1998 and 2005, and also released The Powerpuff Girls Movie in 2002. Cartoon Network revived the series in 2016, although it never reached the same level of popularity as the original did.

Cody is best known for her previous writing credits on Juno, for which she won the Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2008. She’s also worked on Young AdultTully, and Jennifer’s Body

Regnier is currently under an overall dead with Warner Bros. Television. Her past credits include Veronica MarsFalling Skies, and iZombie.
