The New Yorker Celebrates DOMA Ruling with Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie on Cover

After DOMA’s ruling on gay marriage, the New Yorker celebrated by placing Sesame Street icons Bert and Ernie on the cover, in an embrace suggesting they are a couple.

According to the Huffington Post, the cover artist Jack Hunter had originally created the image for a Tumblr account. He was asked about the cover and said, “It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime… This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate.”

The image is incredibly fitting, as the Huffington Post accurately calls them, “One of the most famous gay couples in pop culture.”

Although Bert and Ernie are thought of as gay icons, Sesame Street has always denied the idea of them being a couple. In 2011, they said Bert and Ernie “do not have a sexual orientation,” according to the Huffington Post.

This past Wednesday, the 26, The Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act to be unconstitutional, marking a giant step forward for gay couples in America.
