According to TVLine, CBS is laying the groundwork for a potential spinoff of its long-running sitcom The Neighborhood, and fans won’t have to wait long to meet some of the new faces. The spin-off, which will center on brothers Malcolm and Marty Butler, is expected to be introduced via a backdoor pilot airing during the one-hour season seven finale on Monday, May 5 at 8/7c.
As TVLine reports, the story has already started to shift in that direction. In an episode that aired on March 31, Malcolm, played by Sheaun McKinney (Boss Level, Vice Principals), made a bold move after quitting his assistant coaching job at USC. Upon returning home uncertain of what’s next, it’s clear that change is coming.
After a short break, the show resumes on April 14 and will debut each one of the four new characters slated for the potential spin-off. In that episode, Malcolm attends a creative writing event and connects with a literary agent named Lisa, played by Angelique Cabral (Life in Pieces, Wish). Described as “impeccably dressed, high energy and unpredictable,” Lisa shows a strong belief in Malcolm’s writing talent and wants to help take his work to the next level.
By the May 5 season finale, Malcolm will graduate from USC and relocate to Venice, about 45 minutes from his hometown of Pasadena. His younger brother Marty, played by Marcel Spears (The Mayor, Always a Bridesmaid), is set to join him, marking the next chapter in their story. TVLine states that same episode will introduce the rest of the proposed spinoff’s ensemble, which includes Kara Royster (Pretty Little Liars, Youth & Consequences), Justin Long (Goosebumps, Drag Me To Hell) and Hunter King (The Young & The Restless, Life in Pieces), alongside returning cast members.
If picked up, the suntitled series would likely premiere this fall, potentially airing on Mondays at 8:30 p.m., following the eighth and final season of The Neighborhood. CBS is expected to finalize its 2025-26 primetime lineup by May 7. Other comedy contenders for that time slot include Poppa’s House, which is wrapping its first season on April 28.
