‘The Nanny Diaries’ Adaptation In The Works At Netflix

Netflix is developing a new series based on The Nanny Diaries, according to The Hollywood Reporter, notably marking the streamer’s latest move to expand its lineup of literary adaptations. The project is inspired by the 2002 novel by Emma McLaughlin (Citizen Girl, Dedication) and Nicola Kraus (Citizen Girl, Dedication), whose book was previously turned into a 2007 feature film starring Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story, Black Widow), who will now executively produce the series.

Writers Amy Chozick (The Girls on the Bus, Chasing Hillary) and Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, HBO’s Divorce) are adapting the novel for television, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both will serve as showrunners on the potential series, bringing experience in political drama and character‑driven comedy to the project.

While the 2007 film closely followed the book’s storyline, the new series appears to be taking a different creative direction. The official logline describes Annie as “a broke, aspiring writer in search of a story” who accepts a nanny job for a glamorous Upper East Side socialite, plunging her into a world of extreme wealth. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the logline reveals that Annie secretly lands a book deal to expose the lives of the ultra‑rich, forcing her to maintain a double life even as she grows attached to the family.

McLaughlin and Kraus, who both worked as nannies before writing the novel, remain central inspirations for the story, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Their real‑life experiences helped shape the original book’s satirical look at New York’s elite, a tone the series is expected to explore further.

The Nanny Diaries joins a growing list of book‑to‑series projects at Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Recent adaptations include Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections, while Bridgerton, His & Hers, and The Night Agent continue to anchor the streamer’s lineup.
