On July 22nd 2022, at San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that a new series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, will be brought to Amazon Prime this fall on September 2nd, according to Deadline.
The Lord of the Rings panel session at Comic-Con: The Rings of Power was led by actors Benjamin Walker (Jessica Jones), Charles Edwards (The Crown), and Owain Aruther (The Palace). At first, during the panel, there was an orchestra and operatic chorus led by Bear McCreary (American musician and composer of film known for Battlestar Galactica), and Stephen Colbert (American comedian known for hosting The Colbert Report and The Late Show). Secondly, the panel followed by playing the Amazon Prime series teaser in Hall H, according to Deadline.
The author of The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Beren and Lúthien) had gained inspiration for The Rings of Power from notes in the appendices of The Return of the King and The Silmarillion, according to Deadline. For the new series, there are about two parts of The Silmarillion that are the foundation for The Rings of Power. The Rings of Power is supposed to be “a story of hope and approaching darkness,” says Colbert. However, according to Deadline, Colbert said it is a story of loss.
It can be expected that the new Lord of the Rings adaptation will live up to the expectations that dedicated fans have for the series. From the teaser shown, it’s evident that the series will focus a large portion of the plot on forging the rings. According to the Amazon Prime Video, this includes the Seven for the dwarf lords, nine for the mortal men doomed to die, and one for the dark lord.
An executive producer of the series J.D. Payne (Flash Gordon), said that The Rings of Power adaptation would focus on the “factionalization of these groups, pulling these groups apart,” according to Deadline. The new series will be a painful story for The Lord of the Rings fans to watch, but the executive producer also said that we as a society could learn from the lessons seen throughout the series. As seen in the trailer shown at Comic-Con, the trailer’s voiceover says, “Together we can survive this,” and “Fight with me. Each of us must decide who we shall be,” according to Deadline. The voiceover alludes to the fact that in the series, a gruesome battle will occur to live up to The Lord of the Rings high reputation as a high fantasy adventure of films.
During the session, other clips were shown in the Comic-Con room of crucial aspects of The Lord of the Rings, such as Owain Arthurs dwarf Prince Durin IV, a sleeping mortal giant, and Ismael Cruz Cordova (Miss Bala) captured by orc-like creatures according to Deadline.
In correspondence with the anticipation for the new series, The Lord of the Rings, fans can expect to see if The Rings of Power will surpass the expectations that Amazon Prime has built within this depiction at Comic-Con on September 2nd, 2022.
