‘The Idol’ Director Amy Seimtz Exits Series Amid Overhaul

Deadline has confirmed Tuesday that Amy Seimtz (She Dies TomorrowPet Sementary) has exited the music industry drama, The Idol. Seimtz was set to direct all episodes of the upcoming series.

Her exit is a result of a major creative overhaul, according to Deadline, and she was one of the more high-profile crew to leave the series. The series comes from singer The Weeknd and Euphoria director Sam Levison (Malcolm & Marie). According to Deadline, Levison is expected to have more of a directing role following Seimtz’s exit. Levison will also be working on the third season of Euphoria which was confirmed back in February.

HBO did not comment on Seimtz’s exit from The Idol. However, yesterday, the network announced that the series will be heading in a “new creative direction”. The cast and crew is set to be adjusted amid this creative overhaul.

The Idol will follow a female pop star who starts a romantic relationship with a club owner who is the leader of a secret cult. The Weeknd (American Dad!), Lily-Rose Depp (The KingVoyagers), and Suzanna Son (Red Rocket) will star in the series. The Weeknd will also co-write and executive produce the series, which he co-created with Levison and Reza Fahim.

Joseph Epstein (Snobbery) was to serve as showrunner and writer. Mary Laws (The Neon Demon) was also slated to write and executive produce the series.

A premiere for The Idol has not been confirmed.
