The Good Fight is coming back for its fifth season, this time as Paramount Plus original series, according to Deadline. The Chicago-set legal drama was the first scripted series to originate on Paramount Plus’s predecessor CBS All Access, where its first four seasons were exclusively hosted, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. A fifteen-second teaser uploaded to the official Paramount Plus YouTube channel on May 17 established Thursday, June 24 as the date of the series’ highly anticipated return to the small screen. The Good Fight season five reportedly takes place after a brief time-skip, and strives to complete some of the thoughts raised by the last few episodes of the show’s abbreviated fourth season: “Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski, The Gilded Age) is forced to question whether it is appropriate for her to help run [Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart] with Liz (Audra McDonald, The Gilded Age) when the firm loses two top lawyers. Meanwhile, Marissa (Sarah Steele, Ask for Jane)… become[s] entangled with Hal Wackner (Mandy Patinkin, Homeland), regular Chicagoan who decides to open his own courtroom in the back of a copy shop,” via Deadline.
The two exiting lawyers in question are Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo, The Beast Must Die) and Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo, Da 5 Bloods), according to Deadline. Both will allegedly appear during the season five premiere to complete their storylines, as reported by TV Line.
Jumbo has returned to her native England for both personal and professional reasons. “I wanted my son to grow up in the U.K. and culturally have [sic] that experience,” she explained, via The Guardian. She went on to say that, as of late, she’s been more partial to the notion of contributing to British productions. “I wanted to be part of what I think is happening here, which is this massive growth in things being shot and made and written in the U.K., but that are going out globally,” she told The Guardian in May.
Lindo initially left the cast in order to headline an ABC family drama pilot titled Harlem’s Kitchen written by Zahir McGhee (Scandal) and directed by Stephen Williams (Lost), as reported by Harlem World. However, the Disney-owned broadcast network announced that they would not be moving forward with the project in January 2021, according to Deadline.
As Diane and her co-workers grapple with the loss of Boseman and Quinn, they will also welcome a new arrival to the office, as reported by TV Line. Charmaine Bingwa (Black Box) joins the cast as young, hard-as-nails attorney Carmen Moyo, according to Deadline. Bingwa will be series regular for the entirety of season five, as will Emmy winner Patinkin, Deadline reports.
Season five of The Good Fight premieres on Paramount Plus on June 24.
