During this year’s Super Bowl, Marvel Studios released a brand new trailer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, an upcoming series that is expected to be released to Disney+ later next month, according to Comicbook. This trailer gave Marvel fans an opportunity to glimpse into the future of the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame.
After Steve Rogers’ retirement from Captain America, hoping to lead a simpler life with Peggy Carter in an alternate universe, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson hope to continue his legacy in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Comicbook explains that “while Cap granted his trademark shield to Sam in Avengers: Endgame, it looks like the U.S. Government would like their own agent to take the mantle instead.” The trailer that was released during the Super Bowl conjured excitement among MCU fans, with it featuring superhero action alongside comedy. Bucky’s Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War) spoke on the upcoming series, promising that it will not be like anything fans have seen before.
“We’re getting to do things with these characters that we just never had an opportunity to [do]. I mean, we’re taking them to such different, new waters. We’re having a lot of fun. We’re definitely [having fun]. There’s no way to not have fun with Anthony [Mackie],” via Comicbook. Sam’s Anthony Mackie (Outside the Wire) has also spoken on the upcoming series, claiming that it will explore who gets the opportunity to wield Captain America’s shield.
“At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America…So the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back,” via Comicbook.
The show has been in development for awhile, with fans only able to view a teaser, which was released in December, before this Super Bowl release. The initial teaser alludes to Steve’s potential death and new threat wreaking havoc across our screens. While the series was originally expected to debut this past summer, COVID-19 delayed its launch. Filming was forced to shut down in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and only remained shut down until recent months. Luckily, this trailer will hold fans over until the series’ official release to Disney+ on March 19. The trailer can be watched below:
