‘The Detour’ Cancelled by TBS

TBS has decided to cancel its comedy The Detour after four seasons. The single camera comedy completed its fourth and final season on August 20th of this year. That final season maxed out at 732,000 same-day viewers in August, but overall, the show boasted solid numbers across digital and streaming platforms in seasons past. Season three, for instance, reached as many as 25 million viewers across such mediums.

The Detour comes from husband and wife team Jason Jones and Samantha Bee, both of whom serve as executive producers on the show. Jones, formerly of The Daily Show, also stars in the show as Nate Parker, the father of a dysfunctional family of four whose travels across the US and abroad lead to misadventure at every turn. Past seasons have seen the family’s personal demons cause them to be chased by law enforcement as far as Alaska and eventually Asia and Oceania. Nate’s wife Robin is played by Natalie Zea (Justified, Californication), and his children Delilah and Jared are respectively played by Ashley Gerasimovich (Louie30 Rock) and Liam Carroll (Angie Tribeca).

While Jones’s involvement at TBS might be ending for the time being, Samantha Bee still maintains a strong presence on the network with her hit late night show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. In 2018, the Emmy winning series was renewed through 2020.

The Detour is the latest scripted comedy to be cancelled by TBS, which has also done away with the likes of Angie TribecaPeople of Earth, and Wrecked over the past two years. Per The Hollywood Reporter, this trend of cancellations for scripted shows at the network is tied to the imminent arrival of HBO Max, which is owned by TBS’s parent company Warner Media. The upcoming streaming service is rumored to be the potential new home for a number of TBS’s remaining scripted shows.

The live-action comedic offerings still standing at TBS include Tracey Morgan’s The Last OGSearch Party starring Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat, Miracle Workers starring Daniel Radcliffe, and The Guestbook.
