According to The Hollywood Reporter, the CW has made the decisions regarding the future of All American: Homecoming for the 2023-24 season. Homecoming has been renewed, along with Walker.
Homecoming, along with Walker, Gotham Knights, and Superman & Louis, had their fates decided on Monday. Superman & Lois, the second most-watched show on the network, was renewed. According to the CW, Homecoming draws a decent audience.
The CW renewed 4 scripted series from the 2022-23 season: Homecoming, All American (Homecoming’s parent show), Walker, and Superman & Lois. Homecoming is getting a shorter run of episodes for its upcoming season, decreasing from fifteen episodes to thirteen episodes.
Gotham Knights will air the last two episodes of its first and final season on June 20 and June 27. It has not been renewed for second season. Like Superman & Lois, Gotham Knights is based on characters from DC comics. While the CW has produced several DC shows like The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl, Gotham Knights has reportedly the lowest production costs of any of their DC shows.
The CW is now owned by Nexstar, and Nexstar is looking to shorten season lengths and decrease costs in an attempt to make the CW profitable by the year 2025. The series was never designed to be profitable while under its previous owners, CBS and Warner Bros so this attempt by Nexstar is a change for the network. The Original All-American and Walker are expected to have fewer episodes in this upcoming season. Newly acquired series like the Canadian drama Sullivan’s Crossing and the former AMC series 61st Street are also expected to be fewer episodes. This change will also affect unscripted series like Whose line is it Anyway and Inside The NFL.
With the ongoing strike from the Writer’s Guild of America, the upcoming seasons of these series may be affected further.
