The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Kelly Marcel and Victor LaValle, showrunner and executive producer for The Changeling, said that the season finale was not meant to be an ending. Instead, it was meant to be a cliffhanger.
In fact, when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Marcel said that “Season one was a setup of a lot of questions, and season two is the answer to all of those questions.”
Adding to the discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, LaVelle said that “A season of answers is maybe a simple way to put it.”
The Changeling is based on a book by the same name by Victor LaVelle, the executive producer of the show. It follows two characters named Apollo and Emma in a dark fairy tale setting. In the show, “Apollo and Emma’s love story is a fairy tale—until Emma mysteriously vanishes. Bereft, Apollo finds himself on a death-defying odyssey through a New York City he didn’t know existed.” Says the official synopsis for the show on Apple TV.
The show had a very intense run for the right released episodes in the first season, with fans hoping for a new season. This could be made possible based on the show’s ending, which veered away from the ending of the book. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there was too much information to pack into the first season, which could lead to a potential second season if given enough feedback from viewers.
When addressing this with The Hollywood Reporter, LaVelle said “One of the things Kelly did in the adaptation that was so great was that she expanded, in particular, Emma’s story, Lillian’s story. We got to have so much more of their journeys, but there was no way to just jam all of the book and all of that into eight episodes.”
