‘The Arrangement’ Denies Inspiration Rumors

Looks like the creators of The Arrangement know how to keep themselves from the ire of Tom Cruise.

The creators reportedly got into some hot water once they announced their upcoming limited run series, The Arrangement. The actual arrangement, in the course of the show, is the organization of an almost fairytale date with a Hollywood superstar to an aspiring thespian. And all is well until that dreamer, Christine Evangelista (who plays Megan Morrison), is lured into a suspicious marriage and introduction to an even stranger “self-help” organization because of her date with the famous actor.

Sound vaguely familiar? According to Deadline, quite a few people saw a connection to this fictional couple and the real life couple of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. The Arrangement obviously plays up the drama, sweetening the deal by adding a $10 million price tag for Megan Morrison to accept the groom’s proposal. The series does not even mention Scientology at all, but the creators still had to address the press’ attention during the TCA panel today.

When prodded to see if the series was truly inspired by anyone, executive producer/writer Jonathan Abrams quipped, “Even if I could legally do it … I don’t have the authority to do it.” He later admitted he “didn’t know.”

Unfortunately for him, the onslaught of questions still came, asking if he researched Tom Cruise’s career before this, did he consider flipping the roles, et cetera. Eventually Abrahams said, “It doesn’t matter, because it really isn’t,” referring to the show being based off Tom Cruise, and other actors for the program echoed his statement during their own questions.

The Arrangement will premiere on Sunday, March 5 on the E! Network.
