Nina Sergeevna is moving into the world of artifical intelligence.
Deadline reports that Annet Mahendru, most well known for her role as Russian double-agent Nina Sergeevna on FX’s The Americans, has signed on for a regular role in Syfy’s The Machine.
The series centers on six key people as tensions rise between man and technology with the advancement of artificial intelligence. These six characters will cross paths with one another, and each is vital to humanity’s survival.
Mahendru is set to play the genius but troubled programmer Yana. Yana has created the world’s first super intelligent A.I., called S.A.I., that can help overcome problems like disease, poverty, and pollution. As she works on the S.A.I., Yana begins to suspect that this new machine would rather destroy humanity than help save it. This sets her on a path of danger, pitting Yana against the very A.I. she created in order to save the world.
Besides her critically acclaimed role on The Americans, Mahendru has also appeared in Tyrant, The Following, The X-Files, Grey’s Anatomy, White Collar and The Blacklist.
The Machine is an adaptation of a 2013 film of the same name written by Caradog James. The film starred Toby Stephens and Caity Lotz. The series is being developed for Syfy by Universal Cable Productions.
