The 27th annual Critics Choice Awards took place last night, with Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and HBO’s Succession leading in wins. While Ted Lasso won four total awards, Succession followed with three.
Similar to its sweep at the Emmys, Ted Lasso won Best Comedy Series, with lead Jason Sudeikis (We’re The Millers) winning Best Actor. Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones) and Brett Goldstein (SuperBob) each won respective awards for Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor.
Meanwhile, Succession also faced similar wins to Emmy night, having won the award for Best Drama Series, and actors Sarah Snook (Jessabelle) and Kieran Culkin (Home Alone) having won the respective Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor awards.
Despite Ted Lasso‘s success, HBO won the most awards out of the streamers with nine total, followed by Netflix with eight, Warner Bros. with six, and Apple TV+ with four.
Meanwhile, Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae (Deliver Us From Evil) and Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures) of Showtime’s Yellowjackets each took home a respective award for lead acting in a drama series. Murray Bartlett (Looking) and Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde) each won respective Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series awards for their work in HBO’s The White Lotus.
There were a number of stars who addressed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in their acceptance speeches, urging the public to become informed of the war between the two neighboring nations.
“Our beautiful brothers and sisters — and more importantly the babies — in Ukraine that are being utterly decimated at the moment from this putrid, putrid torrent of abuse,” Waddingham said from London while accepting the award for Best Comedy Series. “Please think of them as much as you can and give as much as you can. Make this stop, please.”
Similarly, Michael Keaton (Batman) of Hulu’s Dopesick accepted his award for Best Actor in a Limited Series by announcing his solidarity with Ukrainian president Volodymur Zelenskyy, who is a former actor and comedian.
“The only thing I say about things in the world, I’m going to say thank you to fellow actor President Zelensky and keep up the fight,” Keaton said. “There’s only one way to change things, environmental, socially, racial justice and social justice — two words: voting rights. Voting rights and voter suppression.”
