Teaser Trailer Released for Final Season of The CW Series ‘Black Lightning’

The CW’s Black Lightning released a teaser trailer for its upcoming fourth and final season on Sunday, via Entertainment Weekly. The season premiere will air on Monday, February 8 at 9 p.m. E.T.

With a note of finality accompanying the 30-second teaser, Jefferson Pierce, portrayed by Cress Willams (Friday Night Lights), appears downtrodden and unsure if he can continue on as his alias, the superhero Black Lightning. The trailer begins with Pierce saying “No matter how hard I try to protect my family, it will always end in tragedy.” He goes on to say: “Black Lightning’s dead.” Going through an identity crisis of sorts, it looks bleak for Pierce and the rest of his family in the series’ final showdown.

*spoilers ahead for season three finale*

One of the main reasons for Pierce’s misery in the upcoming season is due to the fact that his best friend, Detective Henderson, was murdered in the season three finale. In the trailer for the upcoming season, Henderson’s death has taken a toll on him and it’s not something he’ll get over easily.

On Sunday, The CW released the official description for the season premiere, entitled “The Book of Reconstruction: Chapter One.” Written by series creator Salim Akil (Being Mary Jane), it teases what’s to come as Pierce mourns his friend’s death along with what challenges his family and friends face. In addition to Williams, the series stars Christine Adams (Counter Part) as Lynn, James Remar (Sex and the City) as Peter Gambi, Nafessa Williams (Code Black) as Anissa Pierce, and Jordan Calloway (Riverdale) as Khali Payne/Painkiller.

Though this season marks the end for Black Lighting, it will also mark the beginning of a new chapter. Calloway is getting his own spin-off show as the superhero Painkiller, with the backdoor pilot airing sometime during the final season.
