Today, the sun continues to rise on Turner Entertainment.
The network conglomerate that runs both TNT and TBS are enjoying their heyday as they move to renew three of their shows–Animal Kingdom, as renewed by TNT, Angie Tribeca, and Wrecked, as both returned by TBS, reports Deadline.
On the TNT side of things, Animal Kingdom is a roaring new success for the channel, which has seen a slew of dramas over its time but none that attracts such a heavy millennial audience as this one. Now in the midst of its first season, the show pulls over 6 million viewers a week, which is expected only to keep on growing.
The show follows a seventeen year-old boy (Finn Cole) who moves in with his estranged grandmother (Ellen Barkin), who also happens to be the ringleader of a criminal clan. The story is directly based off of an award-winning Australian film with the same general plot directed and written by David Michod.
“Animal Kingdom has signaled the new tone for TNT dramas and is moving the network in the direction we hoped it would,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. She continued, “I’m confident that our strategy of working with high-caliber talent and then getting out of their way will continue to pay off.”
The second season of Animal Kingdom will air in 2017.
On the TBS side, there is plenty of sunlight to go around. Wrecked and Angie Tribeca join Full Frontal with Samantha Bee in an expanding rosters of successful shows renewed, signals of a new dawn at the once-struggling TBS.
“A year ago we began reinventing TBS, and thanks to the incredible talent behind these shows, we’ve come a long way in a very short amount of time,” said Brett Weitz, EVP original programming for TBS. “Pulling the trigger on renewals early allows us to build on our success by giving fans new seasons more quickly.”
Wrecked, which ranks as the highest-viewed comedy among the 18-49 demographic, focuses on a crew of survivors after their plane crashed on an island. The group grapples with threat after threat thrown at them, though, admittedly, many are brought upon by each other. It stars Asif Ali, Zach Cregger, Rhys Darby, Brooke Dillman, Ginger Gonzaga, Will Greenberg, Jessica Lowe, Ally Maki and Brian Sacca, and came from the minds of Justin and Jordan Shipley, who serve as EPs.
Angie Tribeca stars Parks and Recreation and The Office alum Rashida Jones, who plays a detective for the NYPD in a comedic atmosphere. Joining the cast are Hayes MacArthur, Jere Burns, Deon Cole and Andrée Vermeulen. Fellow Office graduate Steve Carell co-created the series alongside his wife Nancy Carell, who positioned Ira Ungerleider as show-runner and third executive producer. On average, the comedy pulls around 2 million normally, and it now moves on to a third season.
For fans of the Turner Entertainment sphere, here’s hoping for many more renewals.
