TBS Renews ‘The Detour’ For Season 3

According to Variety, TBS comedy The Detour is officially returning for a third season, which will premiere next year.

Created by Samantha Bee and her husband/lead actor Jason Jones, the series is based on the couple’s own experience with family vacations. After filming in Georgia, the first season premiered a little over a year ago, while the second season filmed in New York City, and is currently ranked as number one scripted comedy on cable.

The first season of The Detour followed married couple Nate Parker Jr and Robin Randall, and their children Delilah and Jared, as they travel from Syracuse, New York to Florida for a family trip. Nearly 4.4 million viewers watched the first season. The second season saw Nate move his entire family to New York City to pursue a job opportunity, and gained even more fans.

Thom Hinkle, Senior Vice President of Original Programming for TBS, said the following regarding the series renewal:

I hear from so many people who love ‘The Detour,’ even my hardcore comedy friends. Season Two has been so smart, hilarious and wrong. And from the early nuggets I’ve gotten from Jason and Sam, Season Three is going to be even more effed up.

For 10 years, Jones was a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but left the show in 2015, when the show switched hosts to Trevor Noah. He and Samantha are currently developing a comedy for Warner Bros called The Man Hunters about two single 40 year-old women, who decide to strategically and aggressively seek out husbands.

Bee is also best known for being a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but also left the show 2015, after 12 years there, to start her own comedy news show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Her show was nominated for an Emmy last year for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, and Bee was chosen this year for Time’s 100 Most Influential People. She will be voicing a character in the upcoming animated film Elliot the Littlest Reindeer, starring John Cleese, Martin Short, and Josh Hutcherson.

Watch the first and second seasons of The Detour on TBS, and on the TBS website. And stay tuned for more details about the upcoming season.
