After last being seen on Grey’s Anatomy all the way back in 2009, it appears that T.R. Knight, who played George O’Malley for the first five seasons of the show, is ready to get back on the ShondaLand roller coaster. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Knight will return to work with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers on their latest produced show for ABC, The Catch.
Details as to who Knight will be playing has been kept under wraps, but showrunner Allan Heinberg said that the role was created specifically for Knight. His character will be a recurring character throughout the show’s second season.
This role not only reunites Knight with Rhimes and Beers, but also reunites him with Heinberg, who was a writer for Grey’s Anatomy while Knight was still on the show.
When news of the casting was released, Rhimes said “This has been a thrilling secret to keep! One of my favorite family members is home!”
Knight also seemed happy to be returning to work with Rhimes, saying “Working with Shonda, Betsy and Allan again fills me with immense joy. I am heartened to be returning to Shondaland and excited to work with this exceptional cast!”
Heinberg added that he’s excited to working with Knight again and that he’s happy Knight is once again part of the ShondaLand family.
For five seasons, Knight played George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy before he left at the end of the fifth season, a year before his contract expired. He said he left because of a “breakdown in communication” with Rhimes and his character’s lack of storyline in the fifth season. To write him off the show, his character was planning on joining the Army, but instead died and after being hit by a bus to save a pedestrian.
Knight’s role on The Catch shows how he’s rebuilding his relationship with ABC. Back in March, it was announced that he’d joined the cast of divorce drama called When We Rise that was created by Reese Witherspoon that ultimately wasn’t picked up by the network.
Some of Knight’s other roles include a dual role on an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, a role as a political consultant on The Good Wife and a role in Hulu’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 11.22.63.
Season two of The Catch will premiere in the midseason after the third season of How To Get Away With Murder concludes, which is what happened for its first season. Despite a low-rated first season, the show got renewed for its second season back in May.
