‘Supernatural’ Theory: Who Imprisoned Dean and Sam?

Since the winter finale, fans have been buzzing with theories about how and why our favorite brothers are suddenly on the wrong side of iron bars. Who had the power to put Dean and Sam in jail? The popular theory is that the British Men of Letters are responsible, but members of the Supernatural family have something different to say.

TVLine reports that executive producer Andrew Dabb refutes the British Men of Letters theory, giving an alternative account of what truly transpired: “It was really the government that grabbed them. It was really the Secret Service.”

However, the British group will still be a focus of the rest of the season. With the boys in prison, they are bound to attract all sorts of attention: not just from Castiel, but from Men of Letters as well. Now that their imprisonment adds extra fuel to the fire, Jensen Ackles assures us we’ll see more of these interactions to come, saying, “We’re going to see that storyline get fleshed out in the second half of the season. There are going to be some recruitment attempts, some disagreements about methods of hunting, and that will certainly boil to a point.”

Not that Supernatural is any stranger to tension. As Dabb notes, that kind of push and pull between Sam and Dean and the British Men of Letters is the kind of conflict the show is based on: “Because the truth is, even if you disagree with their methods – and Sam and Dean certainly will in some cases – they get results. So that becomes the bigger punch [in the second half of the season]: Do the ends justify the means? And if so, what means are our guys willing to tolerate?”

Supernatural returns on January 26 on the CW.
