The fourth and final season of DC’s Superman & Lois premieres next month on the CW, but it wasn’t always intended to be the series’ last season. According to ComicBook, the series’ showrunners Todd Helbing (The Flash, Mortal Kombat: Legacy) and Brent Fletcher (Lost, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) had originally planned for the series to go on for at least seven seasons.
Though Superman & Lois has received positive ratings from fans and critics alike over the course of its first three seasons, Helbing and Fletcher’s plans were cut short when Nexstar acquired the CW and ended most of the network’s original series. Fortunately for the show’s team and fans, Superman & Lois was renewed for one last season, albeit shorter and with smaller main cast.
“[We] were able to end it exactly how we wanted to end it,” Fletcher said to Entertainment Weekly. “And that means a lot for us.”
Though the Arrowverse adjacent series is ending earlier than its showrunners would have hoped, its team still promises that season four will be a satisfying and surprising conclusion.
“I don’t think people are going to think we’re ending the show the way that we are,” Fletcher said to Entertainment Weekly. “When it ends and the credits come up, they’re going to be surprised.”
In addition to a surprising finale, the showrunners promise plenty of cameos throughout the finale season, including one played by The Flash’s very own Tom Cavanagh (Blue Bloods, Tom and Grant).
Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf, Can You Keep a Secret?) as Clark Kent and Bitsie Tulloch (Grimm, Caroline and Jackie) as Lois Lane. The show explores how Clark and Lois balance superhero life with family life as they raise their sons Jon, played by Michael Bishop (Spin, Salsa), and Jordan, played by Alex Garfin (The Peanuts Movie, Salt). According to Entertainment Weekly, season four will be telling its own version of the Death of Superman comic book arc from 1992 to 1993. Clark is also expected to face his iconic nemesis, Lex Luthor, played by Michael Cudlitz (Southland, The Walking Dead), following the character’s introduction at the end of season three.
The final season of Superman & Lois will debut on the CW with a two-part premiere on October 7 at 8 p.m. ET. New episodes will be released every Monday at the same time.
