The CW is doubling down on Superman content on February 23, the night of the series debut for Superman & Lois, according to Deadline. A documentary special titled Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope is set to air immediately following the new DC series’ supersized ninety-minute premiere, Deadline reports. The proposed two-hour programming block would deprive network flagship superhero series The Flash of its primetime slot, which is why the show’s seventh season has had its premiere date pushed to March 2. The official Twitter account for The Flash confirmed the seven-day delay once it became public knowledge courtesy of Deadline.
Superman & Lois is allegedly contemporary family drama set in Smallville, where Superman (Tyler Hoechlin, Road to Perdition) spent his formative years, as opposed to Metropolis, where many of his adventures with journalist Lois Lane (Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch, Grimm) have been previously set: “Along with all the requisite superhero stuff, the series will focus on [the couple’s] personal lives as parents and hard-hitting reporters,” via SyFy Wire. Jordan Elsass (Little Fires Everywhere) and Alexander Garfin (The Peanuts Movie) portray the couple’s teen offspring and Dylan Walsh (Alter Ego, Unforgettable) plays Lois’s father Samuel, as reported by Deadline.
Superman’s relationship with Lois was previously covered extensively in the ABC series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which notably featured the characters’ official marriage in the 1996 episode “Swear to God, This Time We’re Not Kidding” from its fourth and final season. The week of the wedding’s broadcast coincided with the release of a licensed comic book commemorating the occasion, thereby solidifying its place in the canon and ending courtship process that lasted for over half of the twentieth century. The CW’s Superman & Lois, however, allegedly deviates from the Lois & Clark continuity with the addition of the couple’s children, since the Lois & Clark series finale reveals that the couple cannot conceive, according to CBR.
The half-hour special Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope will reportedly present viewers with an opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes of the first episode, get the inside scoop from members of the show’s cast and crew, and receive an education in the history of DC’s most famous hero, TV Line reports.
Superman & Lois premieres on The CW on February 23 at 8 P.M. Eastern, followed by Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope at 9:30. Season seven of The Flash arrives on March 2 at 9 P.M. Eastern.
