As mentioned by Comicbook.com, Superman & Lois wraps up its four-season run on The CW with its finale that aired yesterday. Fans are reflecting on its place within the broader DC-inspired Arrowverse. While the series exists as a separate entity, its roots and connections to the Arrowverse remain undeniable. Stars Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf, Road To Perdition, Can You Keep A Secret) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm, Supergirl, Crisis On Infinite Earths) first debuted their portrayals of Superman and Lois Lane in Supergirl and The Flash, making their ties to the shared universe both significant and sentimental.
During a San Francisco Fan Expo panel, Tulloch shed light on a fascinating “what if” scenario for the series: a crossover with Batwoman. However, the idea was thwarted by stringent COVID-19 protocols in place when filming began in October 2020. “There was some talk of maybe doing a crossover with Batwoman, and then they were like, let’s just, no,” Tulloch said, as reported by Comicbook.com. Pandemic-related restrictions weren’t the only challenge; the two shows were filmed in different formats, complicating production logistics further.
According to Comicbook.com, the missed Batwoman crossover wasn’t the only Arrowverse nod left on the cutting room floor. Tulloch revealed that a photograph featuring Melissa Benoist’s (Glee, The Longest Ride, Whiplash) Supergirl alongside Hoechlin and Tulloch was initially intended to appear on Lois Lane’s desk in the Superman & Lois pilot. Unfortunately, it was removed, leaving fans to imagine what could have been.
Despite these missed opportunities, Superman & Lois honored its Arrowverse roots in other ways. The show featured guest appearances from familiar Arrowverse actors, though not always in their original roles. David Ramsey (Arrow, Mr. Bones, Flash Vs. Arrow) reprised a version of John Diggle, Jenna Dewan (Step Up, The Rookie, Tamara) returned as Lucy Lane and Tom Cavanagh (Ed, Yogi Bear, Corrective Measures) appeared in the final season as Gordon Godfrey, a character tailor-made for his dynamic comedic timing, according to showrunner Todd Helbing (The Flash, Mortal Kombat: Legacy).
While its connections to the Arrowverse remain a part of its legacy, Superman & Lois has carved its path, delighting fans with its unique storytelling and heartfelt performances, as mentioned by Comicbook.com. The series finale airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET, marking the end of an era for both the show and its devoted audience.
