Chasing Life star Italia Ricci will be joining the cast of Supergirl as Siobhan Smythe aka the Silver Banshee. As if Kara didn’t have enough to face already between love triangles and saving earth from phantom zone escapees (you know, just the usual), Smythe will join CatCo initially as Kara’s rival in the workplace. Later when Smythe becomes Silver Banshee, she poses a larger threat to National City and to Supergirl. Warner Bros. announced Friday that Ricci will appear in Supergirl early next year starting in episode 14 and is set to stay for several episodes. Kara/Supergirl is not catching any breaks. I guess what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?
Supergirl has had and continues to have an excellent cast, and they know it. “We are so excited to be working with Italia,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement. “We’ve been a fan of her work for years and cannot wait to see her take on this iconic comic book role.”
In the DC comic books, Silver Banshee was initially a supervillain opposing Superman but became an issue for Supergirl when she ended up taking over the body of Supergirl’s best friend, Mattie. In a reboot of the DC universe, The New 52, Smythe befriends Supergirl after standing up for her against those who oppose her. Smythe even invites Kara to live with her before she turns into the Silver Banshee. It doesn’t sound like there will be much friendliness exchanged between the two this time, though. The Silver Banshee’s abilities include super-strength, speed, hypersonic wails, and sonic screams that can even kill within a certain range. That sounds like bad news for anyone with super-hearing.
Ricci will be joining the DC Comics family in more than just one way, though. She is engaged to Robbie Amell who played Firestorm (or at least half of him) in The Flash season 1. And Stephen Amell, Robbie Amell’s cousin, is none other than the Green Arrow on Arrow. Being either a DC comics hero or villain really runs in that family, apparently.
Supergirl airs on CBS at 8/7c on CBS.
