According to Deadline, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight (Maria, See) has hinted that the upcoming film adaptation of the hit series could see theatrical release before arriving on Netflix. The film recently completed production, wrapping on December 13, and boasts an impressive cast led by Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place Part II), with Barry Keoghan (Saltburn, The Banshees of Inisherin), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune: Part Two, Silo), and Stephen Graham (Boiling Point, Bodies) also on board, among others.
Although Netflix is set to be the film’s permanent streaming home, Knight has expressed a strong desire for it to be experienced in cinemas first. Speaking with Playlist, he emphasized the importance of a communal viewing experience for fans. “I really want the Peaky fans who have been a big part of this to be watching it all together in one building,” Knight said. “The communication has all been virtual, but I do want this to be in cinemas so that people can sit there together and watch this thing happen.”
Peaky Blinders originally ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2022, earning a devoted global fanbase. The upcoming film is expected to serve as a continuation of the saga, which follows the exploits of the Shelby crime family in post-World War I Birmingham. Playlist reports that Knight described the movie as “mind-blowingly good” and called it “a fitting end to the first chapter,” though he left the door open for future installments. “As long as there’s an appetite for it and I’ve got stories to tell, then why not?” he said, hinting at the potential for similar projects in the future.
