Starz Recruits Regina King and Freddie Highmore to Executive Produce Upcoming Series Adaptation of ‘The Comedown’

According to Deadline, Starz is developing a live-action series adaptation of The Comedown with Regina King (Watchmen, American Crime) and Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Bates Motel) set to executive produce the show. The series is a comedic drama based on Rafael Frumkin’s (Confidence: A Novel) book of the same name.

As written by Deadline, The Comedown is a dark comedy and multigenerational drama which dives deep into lines of race, class, religion, and time through two drastically different families from Cleveland – one Black, the other white. The story depicts how these families lives become entangled one calamitous night when a drug deal goes horribly wrong and a peculiar yellow briefcase disappears. Gretcheen Enders (WandaVision, Queen America) is set to write the script.

King and Highmore will serve as executive producers for The Comedown alongside Enders, Claire Londy (Leonardo, Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person), and Reina King (Scrooged, To Sleep with Anger). The project hails from King’s Royal Ties Productions and Highmore’s Alfresco Pictures, as well as TriStar Television, where Highmore has had an overall deal for his hit medical drama show, The Good Doctor.

This is but one of the many projects on King’s docket. She is also executive producing and directing the upcoming Netflix limited series, A Man in Full, alongside distinguished television writer David E. Kelley (Doogie Howser, M.D., Ally McBeal), as well as producing and playing the title role in John Ridley’s (12 Years A Slave, American Crime) biopic on Shirley Chisholm entitled, Shirley.

Highmore also has a full schedule this year with the sixth season of The Good Doctor and a backdoor pilot for a potential legal spinoff entitled The Good Lawyer. For more on The Good Lawyer, check out our article here.

So far, Starz has yet to announce when a release date for The Comedown can be expected.
