The 2018 film feature Blindspotting is coming to television via Starz. According to Deadline, the network has picked up a spinoff series based on characters from the film. The show will be a half-hour dramedy starring Jasmine Cephas Jones (Dog Days, Monsters and Men ) who will reprise her film role as Ashley.
Blindspotting starred Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer) and Rafael Casal (Bad Education) as best friends dealing with race, friendship, and reality in a gentrifying Oakland, California. According to Deadline, Diggs and Casal wrote and executive produced the film, along with executive producer Jess Wu Calder’s (Corporate Animals, Little Monsters) Snoot Entertainment.
“Let us put you up on game, bruh. No description will encompass the complexity of a ‘Blindspotting’ series, ya dig? So just get juiced, cuz’ it stars Jasmine Cephas Jones, it’s set in Oakland and we’re making it, so it’s lightweight finna to be hella good and the soundtrack will indeed slap. Oh Boy,” said Casal and Diggs, via Deadline.
In the series, Cephas Jones’ Ashley must circumvent life when she and her son are forced to move in with her incarcerated boyfriend’s mother and half-sister, according to Deadline. Casal – who portrayed her boyfriend Miles in the film – will also appear throughout the show.
“Rafael, Daveed, and Jasmine created a beautiful film that we believe will translate perfectly into a compelling series for Starz,” said Starz President of Orignal Programming, Christina Davis via Deadline. “This provocative and powerful narrative couldn’t be more timely, and in picking up the story from Ashley’s perspective, we will be able to shine light on so many of the important social issues that the characters and the audience continue to grapple with,” Davis said via Deadline.
Along with Calder’s Snoot Entertainment, Emily Gerson Saines (Temple Gardin), Ken Lee (Dollar Van, Goose), and Tim Palen (Crash, The Hunger Games) will produce via their Barnyard Projects company. Maggie Leung and Kathryn Tyus-Adair will oversee productions via Lionsgate and Starz, respectively.
