According to The Hollywood Reporter, Starz’s Outlander has announced the premiere date for its eighth and final season, following 12 years of airing. The series will air its final season on March 6 on the network. The premiere will come a little over a year after the conclusion of season seven, which wrapped in January. Although this is the conclusion to Outlander, the franchise continues with the prequel series Blood of My Blood, which has been renewed for a second season.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Outlander is the longest-running original series in Starz history, with eight seasons and 101 episodes. Outlander follows Claire Randall, played by Caitriona Balfe (The Amateur, Belfast), a World War II nurse who time-travels from 1945 to 18th-century Scotland via a stone circle. There, she meets and falls in love with the charismatic Highland warrior Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan (Love Again, The Couple Next Door), as her story is intertwined with major historical events.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series based on Diana Gabaldon’s (Dragonfly in Amber, The Fiery Cross) novels states the synopsis for the final season reads as follows: “Jamie and Claire find the Revolutionary War has followed them home to Fraser’s Ridge, now a thriving settlement that has grown and flourished in their absence. With new arrivals and changes made during their years away, the Frasers are confronted with the question of what they are willing to sacrifice for the place they call home and, more importantly, what they would sacrifice to stay together. While the Frasers keep a united front against outside intruders, family secrets finally coming to light threaten to tear them apart from the inside. Although they’ve left the war for America’s freedom behind, their fight for Fraser’s Ridge has only just begun.”
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the cast of the series also includes Sophie Skelton (Stalker, 211), Richard Rankin (Thirteen, Rebus), John Bell (Wrath of the Titans, A Shine of Rainbows), David Berry (Riptide, Progeny), Charles Vandervaart (Every Day, October Fashion) and Izzy Meikle-Small (Great Expectations, The 7.39).
Outlander is available to stream on Netflix.
