The upcoming British and New Zealand drama The Luminaries, picked up by Starz, will star Eve Hewson (The Knick’s) and Eva Green (Sin City), according to Deadline. The series is based on the book by Eleanor Catton under the same name and follows an adventurous Anna Wetherell, played by Hewson, who has sailed from Britain to New Zealand in search of a new life. When she meets Emery Staines, played by Himesh Patel (Tenet), they fall in love. Meanwhile, Green plays the role of Lydia Wells while Marton Csokas (Into the Badlands) plays Francis Carver and Ewen Leslie (The Gloaming) plays the role of Crosbie Wells.
Hewson has stated that The Luminaries will help give better roles to women, “There are so many female-driven parts that are really good, complex, and different. We have a long way to go, in terms of diversity and gender roles, and equal pay, but it is changing and changing rapidly. I feel lucky to work in the #MeToo era,” via Deadline. Catton will be writing the script for the series, which is said to be much different from the book. Claire McCarthy (Ophelia) will act as the show’s director and executive producer.
Benedict Hardie (Upgrade) will also play the role of Alistair Lauderback, Erik Thomson (800 Words) will be playing Dick Mannering, Richard Te Are (The Dead Lands) will be playing Te Rau Tauwhare, Callan Mulvey (Heartbreak High) will be playing George Shepard, and Michael Sheasby (The Nightingale) will be playing Walter Moody.
