Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic was originally poised to be a followup series that explored more into the world of The Mandalorian. Specifically, the show would follow Gina Carano’s (Deadpool, The Mandalorian) character Cara Dune as she fights with the rangers. However, recent comments from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy indicate that the project has been fully cancelled.
“We’d never written any scripts or anything on that,” Kennedy said in an interview with Esquire.
Instead, Kennedy implied that certain aspects of this show will be “absorbed” into future episodes and story arks for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
“Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of Mandalorian,” Kennedy said.
It should be noted that Disney executives have not released an official statement on this, but with reportedly no major work being done on the production since its announcement last year (as reported in Variety), the threat of an official cancellation only grows. Only adding to this threat is Carano’s firing two months after the show’s announcement after she made offensive social media posts. There has been no official statement as to wether or not this firing directly effected the show, but as mentioned, Carano was slated to be a big part of the show’s story.
This show was announced during Disney’s Investor Day and was not the only Star Wars related show announced. If this show is to be cancelled, fans can look forward to the number of other properties coming to Disney Plus such as Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars Visions, The Acolyte, Obi-wan Kenobi, Andor, and many others.
The next Star Wars property fans will see is The Book of Boba Fett coming to the streaming service on Dec. 29th.
