The iconic Star Trek is back with its new Starfleet Academy trailer, which according to The Hollywood Reporter has was released by Paramount+ during NYCC Comic Con on Saturday. You can watch it here.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Starfleet Academy will be the first live-action series to, focus on their early careers during their twenties. However, it appears as if this trailer was made specifically to counterbalance the first trailer, which had a very divided reaction, as it was seen as “cringy” and as “Gen Z TikTok Space Prom” according to a person referenced by The Hollywood Reporter. The new trailer is much grittier, with an intense appearance from Paul Giamatti (Billions, Holdovers) for good measure within the trailer, which Mxdwn previously covered here.
The show will also have Holly Hunter (Incredibles 2, Thirteen) starring as the Academy’s Chancellor, alongside Robert Picardo (Innerspace, Star Trek: First Contact) as the Doctor, and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, Destroyer) as a guest star for the first season. And the show will have Alex Kurtzman (Amazing Spiderman 2, Star Trek 2009) and Noga Landau (Nancy Drew series, Tau), which brings good faith to the show due to their extensive previous experience and portfolio according to The Hollywood Reporter.
So far, it appears that the show will be heralding a new era, as many previous Star Trek shows have concluded recently, such as Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek Prodigy, and Star Trek Picard Worlds. The show will be helping the current flagship of the franchise Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has been renewed for a fifth and final season; however, other Star Trek shows are also in the works, but Academy seems to be projected to be the next one to carry on the torch of the franchise.
According to BlogTrekcore.com, the series is set to release on January 15th of 2026, with a 10 episode run to reach all the way onto March 12th of 2026. And in the meantime, to build hype, Paramount+ has released the Starfleetacademy.com website, where fans can learn more about the show, set images, and the history of the academy for those more hungry for lore of the show and series. Leaving only one question to be answered, how will the fanbase react to this new era of Star Trek, with it’s much more gritty tone, only time and the audience will tell.
