According to Deadline, the 1980s Buck Rogers in the 25th Century actor, Gil Gerard, died Tuesday morning. He was 82. Gerard was battling cancer and was currently in hospice, with his wife, Janet Gerard, by his side. She announced her husband’s death on social media.
Deadline reported that Gerard’s wife shared the news with the media and then proceeded to post a message on the actor’s personal Facebook page. This was a message that Gil had written specifically for his fans to be posted upon his death. The post was shared and said, “My life has been an amazing journey. The opportunities I’ve had, the people I’ve met and the love I have given and received have made my 82 years on the planet deeply satisfying. Don’t waste your time on anything that doesn’t thrill you or bring you love. See you out somewhere in the cosmos.”
Deadline also mentioned that the television show Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was produced by Glen A. Larson (The Fall Guy, Magnum P.I.) and aired on NBC for two seasons. Gerard played the lead character, Buck Rogers. He played alongside Wilfred Hyde-White (The Letter, The Toy), Erin Grey (Finding Grace, Silver Spoons) and Twiki, the robot voiced by Mel Blanc (Rockin’ with Judy Jetson, Who Framed Roger Rabbit). The show originally was a made-for-TV movie, which then later served as the pilot for the series. Gerard continued to work consistently as an actor in other episodic television shows and indie movies. Some of those included E.A.R.T.H. Force, where he portrayed the character Dr. John Harding in 1990; six episodes of Days of Our Lives in 1997; and, more recently, he played opposite Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) and Ryan Gosling (Drive, Project Hail Mary) in the 2016 film, The Nice Guys.
According to Deadline, Gerard’s wife posted on social media: “Early this morning Gil – my soulmate – lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer. From the moment when we knew something was wrong to his death this morning was only days. No matter how many years I got to spend with him it would have ever been enough. Hold the ones you have tightly and love them fiercely.”
