Snowpiercer, the only remaining original scripted series on TNT, will not run on the basic cable network, according to Deadline exclusive. This move off the Warner Bros. Discovery network is presumed to be part of the tax-write offs for content at Warner Bros. Discovery.
“We can confirm that TNT will not air season four of Snowpiercer,” said a spokesperson for the network via Deadline. “This was a difficult decision, but our admiration for the talented writers, actors and crew who brought Snowpiercer’s extraordinary post-apocalyptic world to life remains strong. We have been working collaboratively with the producers since last year to help the series find a new home where fans can continue to enjoy the compelling story and exceptional visual experience. We look forward to working with them on future projects.”
According to CinemaBlend, Snowpiercer brought some dystopian scripted drama to TNT for the first three seasons, starting back in 2020. TNT is part of the Warner Bros. Discovery network following last year’s merger.
“We’re done with that chapter,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels last week.
The TNets already had been scaling back on original scripted programming. The process was accelerated by the Discovery-WarnerMedia merger, according to Deadline.
Snowpiercer is based on Bong Joon-ho’s (Parasite, Memories of Murder) 2013 movie and became the number one new scripted drama on all of ad-supported cable in 2020. The series stars Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Blindspotting), Rowan Blanchard (The Goldbergs, Girl Meets World), Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Hulk), Roberto Urbina (Narcos, Che: Part One), Katie McGuinness (Roots, The Borgias), and Iddo Goldberg (Peaky Blinders, The Zookeeper’s Wife). The fourth season brings Michael Aronov (The Drop, The Americans) and Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Avengers) as new additions.
“We love Snowpiercer and believe season four completes a story with incredible talent that will entertain viewers while exploring issues of climate change and class warfare. We are so passionate about this series that we have acquired the rights to control the franchise,” said Tomorrow Studios’ CEO/Partner Marty Adelstein (Made of Honor, Hanna) and President/Partner Becky Clements (Hanna, Physical) in a statement via Deadline. “We hope to find the perfect partner shortly and finish a great ride with the final season.”
The show is executive produced by Christoph Schrewe (Mr. Robot, City on a Hill), new showrunner Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Helstrom), Matthew O’Connor (Roxanne, Alice), Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, Sinister), Adelstein and Clements of Tomorrow Studios, and Ben Rosenblatt (Prey, The Alienist), and the original film’s producers, Joon-ho, Jinnie Choi (Coma, In the Big House), Miky Lee (Parasite, The Chaser), Dooho Choi (Okja, The Last Godfather), Tae-hun Lee (Lady Vengeance, The Man from Nowhere), and Park Chan-wook (Thirst, The Handmaiden).
Stay tuned for more news on the fourth season of Snowpiercer.
