Alison Schapker, showrunner for Netflix’s Altered Carbon, will partner with Skydance Television for an adaptation of Korean drama Hotel Del Luna. Schapker will develop and produce the series, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Skydance will also work alongside CJ ENM, which is the studio behind Parasite, the 2020 Academy Award-Winner for Best Picture directed by Bong Joon-Ho (The Host). Studio Dragon will serve as supplementary studio in development and production. The collaboration between studios comes partly from CJ ENM’s acquired take in Skydance Media earlier this year, via Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, Studio Dragon’s partnership with Skydance made it the first Korean studio to develop scripted programming with a U.S. production company.
With a deal at Skydance, Schapker will develop Hotel Del Luna, which is about a “mystical hotel whose guests are all spirits and its human manager, that is “reimagined for a global audience,” the two studios say, via Hollywood Reporter. The cast included Ji-eun Lee (Persona), Yeo Jin-goo (The Crowned Clown), Shin Jung-geun (The Five) and Bae Hae-sun (Don’t Dare to Dream).
In 2019, the show gained popularity in South Korea. Airing on tvN, Hotel Del Luna was the network’s top-rated drama for the year. The Korean series was originally written by sister duo Jeong-eun Hong (My Girl) and Hong Mi-ran (You’re Beautiful). The directing pair was Oh Choong-Hwan (Sandbox) and Kim Jung-hyun (The Rebel).
About the project, head of Studio Dragon’s global division Hyun Park said, “We are thrilled to have Alison lead the adaptation of Hotel Del Luna, hopefully our first of many co-development projects with Skydance. We believe Hotel Del Luna will enhance the reputation of Korean storytelling around the world by showcasing the global appeal of our local stories,” via Hollywood Reporter.
The adaptation has not announced the cast or remaining directors and producers, but the original series is available to stream on the Korean platform, Viki. The trailer can be seen below:
