According to Deadline, the highly anticipated miniseries starring Colin Farrell, (The North Water, True Detective) created by Lauren LeFranc (The Impulse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) for Max, will air on Sky across Europe. Viewers in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria can catch The Penguin on the pay-TV network and its streamer, Now, with it set to stream on Sky Atlantic later this year.
Sky’s acquisition of the miniseries comes just weeks after a similarly big move to acquire all twelve seasons of The Walking Dead, alongside its numerous spin-offs. As reported by Deadline, the network’s acquisition of the Warner Bros. Television and DC Comics miniseries occurred outside of Sky’s pre-existing arrangement with HBO, which expires at the end of next year. The termination of this deal, however, will not affect many of HBO’s staples, such as The Last of Us, which will remain on Sky beyond 2025.
The Penguin, which Sky’s Group Director of Acquisitions Katie Keenan in a statement to Deadline suggested is “arguably DC’s answer to The Sopranos,” boasts star-studded cast, lead by Farrell, who is reprising his role as the titular Penguin from Matt Reeves’ 2022 blockbuster The Batman. The cast also features DC alum Clancy Brown (Justice League, Transformers: EarthSpark), who enjoyed a diverse career featuring credits from The Shawshank Redemption to SpongeBob SquarePants.
Expanding on his aforementioned 2022 hit film, Reeves (Lift, War for the Planet of the Apes) serves as executive producer of the miniseries alongside his frequent collaborator Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Farrell, Bill Carraro (Blade Runner 2049, American History X), and Daniel Pipski (Ticket to Paradise, A Teacher) for Warner Bros. LeFranc leads the production as showrunner and writer for the miniseries while Craig Zobel (The Mare of Easttown, The Leftovers) is slated to direct the first three episodes releasing later this year.
While an exact release date has yet to be announced, fans can rest assured that the iconic Gotham crime lord will be back on their screens, and insight into his enigmatic rise to power will be revealed before the year’s end.
