According to The Hollywood Reporter, Uncoupled will be returning for second season on Showtime. The LGBTQ+ romantic comedy stars five-time Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, A Series of Unfortunate Events) and was previously canceled at Netflix.
The producing company behind the show is MTV Entertainment Studios, a part of Paramount Global, which is also responsible for Showtime. Last year, Deadline reported rumors about the cancellation following low numbers — the series reached the sixth spot on Netflix’s Top Ten list only once. Showtime was the top contender to house the series before news of its official cancellation was announced. Interestingly, news regarding Showtime series Ripley, which will be moving to Netflix, was released just moments before. Ripley follows a grifter in 1960s New York and stars Emmy nominee Andrew Scott (His Dark Materials, Victor Frankenstein), Johnny Flynn (The Outfit, Stardust), and Dakota Fanning (The Alienist, The First Lady).
As Showtime prepares to merge with Paramount+, it is not surprising that Uncoupled was revived. The streaming service is looking to be more “culturally diverse,” says The Hollywood Reporter. As a result, Three Women, American Gigolo, and Let The Right One In have been cancelled by Paramount Media Networks CEO Chris McCarthy.
The drama was created by Darren Star (Sex and the City, Emily in Paris) and Jeffrey Richman (Modern Family, Frasier). Star reportedly has a deal with Paramount Global.
Uncoupled followed Michael Lawson, a New York City real estate broker who, when his longtime boyfriend, played by Tuc Watkins (The Mummy, One Life to Live) moves out, must face the prospect of starting over — and dating again — in his 40s, according to Netflix.
The series debuted in July 2022. The cast included Emerson Brooks (The Last Ship, MacGyver), Tisha Campbell (Martin, My Wife and Kids), Brooks Ashmanskas (Julie & Julia, The Good Wife), and Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock).
